It gets the point nicely, many girls grow up being told that cars aren't for them and it changes everything. My girlfriend doesn't like cars and I've caught her saying they're just "a man thing" because that's what she'd been told all of her life. I don't care that she isn't into cars but that reasoning really grinds my gears.

We'll see. Even good articles have clickbait titles these days because money, it's just the way of things.

My 2 year old girl is getting loaded up with car toys and experiences so I'll have someone to race with later. She's become very outdoorsy and loves to ride in the car...often trying to tug me outside to do so. My 11 year old boy who I made the same efforts on could care less and immerses himself in electronics. Oh well.

Good article! If we ever have a girl, I definitely plan on introducing her to car culture. If she likes it, awesome! I will help her be as involved as she wants to be. If not, no big deal! I'll still support the activities she is interested in.

I like the idea behind the title and don't really have the time to read the whole thing right now but car enthusiast, just like any other male dominated hobby, have the problem of the image of the female members of that community.

I'm trying to think of the best way to word this that doesn't come off really really bad. And I know starting your point with a statement like that is usually a bad idea.

The problem is you get a lot of two types of girls in this community. You get one type that just wants to be one of the guys and is more of a tomboy and is embracing this male hobby as more of that tomboy identity. The other kind is the girls who are just there to get the attention of boys. I think these two types of girls you see are kind of a deterrent to women who just want to like a thing because they like it. They don't want to be seen as tomboys and they don't want to come off as someone who is just there to get the attention of boys.

My wife likes cars but she doesn't make a big deal of it because I think she doesn't want to be associated with these two groups. She also likes a lot of video games but would never call herself a gamer for the same reasons.

I see what you mean, the article addresses this. It says that there needs to be an acceptance that girls don't have to be tomboy or whatever to like cars, it can just be a thing that they like as it is for us. Attitudes do seem to be changing, but slowly.

Yep this is a good attitude for it, introduce people to something and let them make their own decision.

I'm actually more ok with the tomboys than the second type. They pretend to be car people on the surface but don't know anything and usually just parrot someone else's opinions.

Honestly though I think that's a problem caused by some guys. They drool over any woman who gets into a car and immediately objectify them. So women with maybe poor self esteem or not getting much attention see that and try to get involved. If other car girls were treated as equals that behaviour would cut right out.

I would do the same if we have a boy, but in the context of the article, that's what went from my mind to my fingers.

I agree with that entirely. It's why I wont attend import events that perpetuate those attitudes. Also not a fan of grid girls or any of that other bullcrap. Less of that stuff and it might be easier to bring the whole family to more car events.

They drool over attractive women*

Anyone deemed not attractive enough, guys seem to automatically go on the defense, and start quizzing women to see if they actually know what they are talking about. Or they just completely ignore them in hopes they go away.

"Ugly" Woman = Here For Attention, But That Won't Happen = Drive Them Away

Attractive Woman = Want Them Around = No Questions Asked

Maybe I've just been around too many asshats...

My wife loves cars, and loves my GSX-R. She works on both our Tacoma and my bike with me. We're planning to get a Corvette C6 together soon. Its nirvana. :)

That's what I've seen too. Older women tend to get reactions like "I bet her husband does all the work" and young girls are idolised.

I tell you from the commuting I have done almost all the nicer cleaner cars I see driving on the interstate 8 out of 10 times it's a 50+ woman.

Even though she isn't into cars my girlfriend looks after hers better than I look after mine. She washes it and makes sure it gets serviced on time and what not. I just repair broken bits and change the oil when it needs it on mine.

As a female petrol head, I'll be the first to point out that the women fuel the negative stereotype just as much as the males do.

Finding car/bike enthusiast pages on Instagram is super easy, but finding one that doesnt post as ass pic every couple days is few and far between. Women either are a.) disgusted.

It's not easy to make me blush, but god dammit I get tired I seeing the inevitible naked chick in a flat bill cap with the "CAMBERGANG" across it. Vomit. Or the girl in Vans leaning down, showing just enough cleavage as she cleans a set of BBS reps. Gag. Stop promoting this!

or b.) They want to be that girl.

Car girls get attention. Duh. So what do they do? They paint their wheels pink, or put a Hello Kitty sticker decal on their cheap sport bike helmet so they can delcare "LOOK! IM A CHICK! NOTICE ME!" I HATE the girls like this. It's super easy for a real gearhead to point out a fake, geez, just compare it to all the guys who drive foxbody mustangs. (I kid, I kid.) Also, the lack of serious female car communities is absolutely ridiculous. Most sites I find discuss how they've incorporated glitter into their mods. Seriously, can we just stomp this out?

IMO, Both sides are guilty.

This article, I like it.

This headline, I despise it.

While I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment, a headline is supposed to give a summary in a few words of what is in the article. If you can't think of one, repeat the headline of the article you're linking to. You had two stars before I added mine. Imagine how many you'd have if you used something relevant!

You're right that both sides are somewhat guilty. Guys give the attention, girls want it. But there are just as many guys who use their car for attention with no idea what theyre actually doing *cough stance*.
